Step Nine

Made direct amends to such people wherever possible, except when to do so would injure them or others.

An amend is a change in behavior, not just an apology. The word ‘amend’ means to add to something in order to improve it, complete it, restore it, and make it better. The purpose of an amend is to make peace.

The “amend” to ourselves is the ongoing process of stopping self-destructive behavior and starting to prioritize our well-being. Specific actions could include enforcing boundaries, prioritizing self-care, seeking healthy support, and changing our internal dialogue.

“[Step Nine] begins with willingness, with doing what is obvious, and with asking for and receiving Divine Guidance in the process.”

Melody Beattie
